As we have seen throughout this series of posts, there are many elements to a project. Integration is the process of coordinating all of the elements such as tasks, resources, stakeholders, priorities, and risk to ensure the project meets its goals. Integration is a crucial part of project management, especially when the project is complex, several teams are involved, and processes interact.
A project manager is skilled at project integration. They coordinate multidisciplinary teams which might include people internal and external to the organization. They facilitate the way teams will work and manage the project as a system, with all of its dynamic interdependencies.
Like other processes, integration will happen continuously throughout the project. If there is a change to the project (affect on scope, schedule, or budget), the accepted changes have to be integrated into the project plans and communicated out to stakeholders. Integration also happens at the end of the project when the deliverable is integrated into the company’s value stream.
